A good designer works with you, researching aspects of your lifestyle in relation to your space.  A good designer pushes you to be specific about your plans for the space, and about your style preferences, so you should start a project by thinking about yourself... 

Identify your needs: what you like...and don't like about your home and which items of furniture you want to have integrated into the design.  Write down what you want to use the room for. Identify who'll be using it, during what times of the day, and the atmosphere you'd like to feel in that space. Delve into the details so that you are armed with well thought out answers when your designer starts their research.
