“We love...”

Danish design...
If you've been lucky enough to visit any part of Denmark you'll know what I'm talking about...

I only started to really understand what Danish design was all about after I'd strolled around Copenhagen and window shopped (it was about all I could afford at the time...). Just about every other store was full of...Design. The Danes are born with it, they “bathe” in it in their daily lives, and they truly understand it.
Furniture, accessories, lighting... it's all so simple and just so darned good. Because it's “simple” design (always the most difficult to achieve) you get to see the lines of the object, and suddenly everything you look at is a sculptural piece of art.
Honestly, I used to be a bit sceptical of this minimalistic approach (and the appreciation of) the “minimalistic movement”, and almost wondered if it wasn't all part of the “rather snobbish” infrastructure you can find in the design world at times...But my Copenhagen stroll changed all that, and I started to understand the appeal, because after all, why would you want to put such elegant lines in the shade by surrounding it with chunky and over-worked furnishings? It needs almost a monastic approach to set off its charms.
But, don't get me wrong. Getting precious about design is just not my style, so even though I'm a relatively late convert to minimal interiors, I've had some amazing results when mixing and matching (sparingly) with more homely pieces, and some truly stunning results placing antiques next to it. They play off each other and both stand out as true Kings of Design.
Gosh, I LOVE Danish design!
