| A well designed eclectric/retro look |
It's easy to get disheartened when you crave elegance and your room gives you eclectic. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE eclectic, but there are certain "guidelines" to follow when putting together an unstructured look. So if your room is a happy mix of styles more through accident then design then read on.
Look closely at each piece in your room and ask yourself: why is it there? Do I love it? Is it functional? If it's not one of these two things then it could do with being “fixed”...or moved out!
So, how can you make a mix of styles into an elegant ensemble? Well it's not as hard as you might think: First, pick a base colour (not hot pink, unless you're really wanting to make a BIG statement!)...something “quiet”. I hesitate to say “neutral”, because to most people that means only the cream/white/beige tones, but you can great results by using colours with lots more depth and pigment, because deeper shades can still have that same “neutral”effect. So, choose a colour that looks calm and “sits quietly without shouting”.

| Look how wood "pops" when it's surrounded by simplicity! |
Then paint all your pieces of furniture that are "less than lovely". Keep away from anything truly antique, and any piece made from lovely, old, patinated wood. You'll see that the moment everything else is “neutralized” your chosen wooden piece “pops”, and starts to look like a piece of art.
Make sure your paint product is up to the job. We use paints from the RustOleum range when we work on furniture updates, because they bring good results, are readily accessible, and are quick and easy to use. And I'm sure you'll find your happiness in their colour range.
Once it's done you'll be amazed at how “quiet” and elegant your space looks. Details on doors and trims will stand out as architectural highlights, and you'll notice floors and moldings that were simply lost in the “visual crowd” before . Add small touches of colour back into the scheme, by picking a contrasting shade and painting the inside of dresser and doors. It makes a lovely visual surprise when you open them!
